Autism Rates Now 1 in 31. What Does That Mean?

Autism Rates Now 1 in 31. What Does That Mean?On April 16, 2025, the CDC released its newest findings on autism prevalence, stating that the developmental disability now affects 1 in 31 children aged 8 years, based on data from 2022.

The latest research explores a combination of developmental, genetic, and environmental components.

So why has the number of people diagnosed with autism increased? There are several contributing factors, including:

  • Improved identification and diagnosis rates of autistic individuals.

  • Improved diagnosis of girls and minority children.

  • Expanded diagnostic guidelines that now include previously separate conditions such as Asperger’s Syndrome and Pervasive Developmental Disorder, which now includes different levels of support needs.

  • A wider umbrella of ASD diagnosis now includes individuals with co-occurring disorders such as Down Syndrome, OCD, and anxiety.

Milestones is grateful to be a trusted source for consistent, evidence-based information. We stand with the Autism Society of America, which released the following statement on April 16, 2025:

"The Autism Society of America, alongside leading disability organizations and experts in the scientific and medical communities, agree more expansive, high-quality research is essential to deepen our understanding of Autism — research that must be grounded in science and free from bias."

The conversation around autism and vaccines is long considered settled science, yet many myths about a connection continue to surface. Many well designed studies have shown that there is no association between vaccines and the development of autism. Our mission at Milestones is to improve the lives of autistic individuals, families, caregivers, and professionals by educating, coaching, and connecting them with trusted resources. We envision a community in which autistic individuals reach their full potential as integrated members of society, with their needs supported and their abilities, strengths, and voices valued.
