Autism Rates Now 1 in 31. What Does That Mean?

On April 16, 2025, the CDC released its newest findings on autism prevalence, stating that the developmental disability now affects 1 in 31 children aged 8 years, based on data from 2022.
The latest research explores a combination of developmental, genetic, and environmental components.
So why has the number of people diagnosed with autism increased? There are several contributing factors, including:

Improved identification and diagnosis rates of autistic individuals.

Improved diagnosis of girls and minority children.

Expanded diagnostic guidelines that now include previously separate conditions such as Asperger’s Syndrome and Pervasive Developmental Disorder, which now includes different levels of support needs.

A wider umbrella of ASD diagnosis now includes individuals with co-occurring disorders such as Down Syndrome, OCD, and anxiety.
