Milestones Celebrates Autism Appreciation MonthWorld Autism Day on April 2, 2025

April has a long history of significance in the autism community as a month to focus on autism awareness and acceptance. Milestones Autism Resources is taking this recognition one step further, in a greater act of inclusion and appreciation of the value autistic individuals bring to our society. That is why Milestones is proud to recognize the month of April as Autism Appreciation Month.

We are deeply committed to our mission: improving the lives of autistic individuals, families, caregivers and professionals by educating, coaching, and connecting them with trusted resources, especially in times of uncertainty. This month, and all year long, we seek to spotlight the unique perspectives, accomplishments, and contributions autistic individuals bring to our communities and our lives, each and every day.

WHY DOES APPRECIATION MATTER?

Here is some insight:

“Autism appreciation is about finally recognizing so much of what the autistic experience is, without making autistic people feel othered. Appreciation celebrates autistic joy, strength, resiliency, community, the spirit of disability justice, and so many facets of autistic life that often go ignored. Appreciation not just gives us a seat at the table, but allows us to create something better that is more inclusive and accessible for everyone - not despite our differences, but because of them.” ~ Haley Moss, Esq - former Milestones Executive Conference Committee Member, Neurodiversity Expert, & Autistic Attorney

“Awareness, acceptance and appreciation go hand in hand. I could accept my autism after I became aware of it only once I could appreciate it. Yes, it has cost me-- friends, sensory overload, and misunderstandings. And also it has given me -- a preference for authentic interactions, less susceptibility to influencers, and an ability to learn fascinating things in great detail.” ~ Elizabeth Stiles - 2025 ConneXtion Speaker, Autistic Self Advocate, & Professor of Political Science at John Carroll University

“Every day I realize more and more how large the spectrum of human expression is and how important it is to always inquire how each person (autistic/neurodiverse/neurotypical) defines themselves.” ~ Reinhild Boehme, LISW-S - 2025 ConneXtion Speaker, Educator, Author, Immigrant

"Different doesn't mean bad or good, it means different.” ~ Natasha Nelson, 2025 ConneXtion Speaker, CEO of Supernova Parenting, Neurodivergent Leader & Advocate
