Home Adult Diagnosis Guide Provider Guide

Adult Diagnosis Providers

Where Do I Start?

The first thing we recommend is to read through our Adult Diagnosis Tool Kit. It will give you lots of information, like why someone would want a diagnosis, the differences between formal and self diagnosis, and other research suggestions.

Secondly, review our provider list below. Most of these providers have waiting lists that can last for weeks, or even months. We encourage you to be patient and proactive -- call and place your name on several waiting lists or leave messages as needed to get an appointment. If you're able to remove yourself from other waiting lists once you get an appointment, that can help free up space for other self-diagnosed individuals waiting for a spot.".

One way to get an appointment faster is to make an appointment with a provider where you have to pay out-of-pocket. While these providers don't take insurance, their wait times are typically much shorter. If you decide to go this direction and are not able to afford the assessment yourself, consider asking family or close friends to help you pay. We offer other suggestions in the next section.

While You are Waiting for Your Diagnosis Appointment

  • Get involved in support groups or social groups with other autistic adults! Not only do you get the chance to meet others, you might learn tips from other them. You can find virtual support groups through Facebook, Discord and Reddit, and our Resource Center offers a listing of in-person groups.
  • Read books by autistic authors and autism experts to learn more about their experiences. We have a comprehensive list of recommended reading suggestions in a variety of topics.
  • Start with one of our suggested online autism tests, which do not give you an official diagnosis, but can at least satisfy your interest with a self-diagnosis.
  • If you don’t have one already, create a list of your personality traits and life experiences that make you think you might be autistic. Be as detailed as you can, it will be incredibly helpful at your appointment.
  • Learn what will happen at your appointment. This Wikihow will give you a step-by-step account of what you can expect when the day comes.
  • If you scheduled an appointment with a provider that does not take insurance, you will need to pay out-of-pocket. The costs for the formal diagnosis process can be significant. While we can not guarantee any financial resource, here are some organizations that could potentially help you with grants or financial assistance, if you qualify:
  • Try to be patient! We know waiting can cause anxiety. Completing these suggestions above will help you as you wait.

The resources and information in this guide are meant to be a reference, and should not be considered comprehensive or an endorsement or recommendation of any providers, methodologies or services from any of the groups, agencies or companies listed. We urge you to make independent judgment when selecting a professional to assist you.

This provider list is updated as of 8/21/24 and we are updating this list as often as possible.
If you find a resource is no longer accepting new patients, please let your Helpdesk staff member know.
