One of the two revised criteria for a diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) in the Diagnostic Statistical Manual-5 (DSM-5, 2013) is “persistent deficits in social communication and social interaction across multiple contexts.” Due to these significant deficits, many individuals with ASD often demonstrate challenging behaviors in an effort to communicate. Functional Communication Training (FCT) seeks to eliminate challenging communicative behaviors by replacing them with socially appropriate and functional ones. This presentation will discuss pre-FCT and FCT teaching procedures including assessment of alternative communicative behaviors and programming for generalization across people and environments.
