One of the two revised criteria for a diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) in the Diagnostic Statistical Manual-5 (DSM-5, 2013) is “persistent deficits in social communication and social interaction across multiple contexts.” This presentation will focus on imitation and observational learning of social and communication skills, and the clinical implications for children with ASD. The four separate processes involved in observational learning will be presented. Teaching strategies based in the principles of observational learning, also referred to as social learning theory, will be discussed.
