One of the two revised criteria for a diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) in the Diagnostic Statistical Manual-5 (DSM-5, 2013) is “persistent deficits in social communication and social interaction across multiple contexts.” These include deficits in social-emotional reciprocity, nonverbal communication used for social interaction, and developing and maintaining relationships. This presentation will discuss deficits in individuals with ASD with respect to specific developmental social processes, and maladaptive behaviors that interfere with learning. Teaching strategies to address beginning social and communication skills from gaze to establishing peer relationships will be presented.
