FAMILY GET-TOGETHERS
Tips to make the most of your
holidays this season.

1.Think Ahead
- Get the schedule for the family get-together in advance.
- Intentionally plan when to arrive and when to leave. (Do you want to avoid a large crowd? Is it best to arrive closer to meal time?)

2.Plan and Prepare
- Role play conversations or play scenarios with your child prior to the visit. (Practice together: "Hi _____! How are you? Do you want to play _____ with me?")
- Bring along a variety of preferred activities and reinforcers (rewards) so your child doesn't get bored.
- Go to edhelper.com and download holiday stories, word searches, and coloring pages.

3. Set a Behavior Standard
- Decide which behaviors are acceptable and which ones aren't.
- Think ahead about the reinforcer you will give your child if he/she exhibits appropriate behavior and the frequency you need to give that reinforcer.
- Do your best to prevent behaviors before they occur. What sets your child off? If it's a dog, ask the host ahead of time if the pet can be kept outside or in the basement. Or if it's loud noises, opt to bring headphones along.

4. Cut Yourself Some Slack
- Have fun yourself! Take advantage of extra hands who can give you a break. Remember that a shorter visit might be more enjoyable and less stressful than a longer visit.
